2023 Toyota GR HILUX – Toyota HILUX 2023
DAKAR-INSPIRED HILUX GR SPORT MAKES WORLD PREMIERE
– Most powerful HiLux ever, with 165kW and 550Nm
– Rally-inspired GR design enhancements
– Wider tracks, tuned suspension, and larger disc brakes distinguish this off-road halo model.
Toyota has raised the bar in terms of performance and design, revealing the world premiere of the HiLux GR Sport, a sporty off-road vehicle with more power, wider tracks, tuned suspension, and larger disc brakes.
With its tough Dakar-inspired design, intuitive handling, and powerful driving performance, the new halo variant of the HiLux range builds on the renowned durability and rough-road performance of the core model, leveraging GAZOO Racing’s experience in motorsport.
Engineers from Toyota Australia, a global center of excellence for Toyota 4WD vehicles, have been instrumental in the development programme, collaborating with colleagues from Latin America, Thailand, and Japan.
The new off-roader is Toyota’s most powerful diesel HiLux ever offered in Australia. The 2.8-litre engine’s power and torque have been increased by 10% to 165kW and 550Nm, thanks to revised turbo-supercharging and fuel-injection control1.
The HiLux GR Sport provides added confidence for accelerating and overtaking in all conditions, thanks to sportier tuning for the automatic transmission and an expanded lock-up area, as well as optimal control via paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
To accommodate the most demanding driving conditions, the new platform features wider tracks (extended 140mm front and 155mm rear), redesigned wishbones, and a reinforced rear axle.
Dedicated monotube shock absorbers with increased damping force and heat dissipation capacity, stiffer coil springs, and an optimal front-rear suspension balance provide exceptional handling by increasing stability through reduced roll angle and providing precise steering response. The configuration also allows the driver to enjoy the adrenaline rush of a sporty vehicle without sacrificing ride comfort for everyday use.
The new HiLux GR Sport, which is only available in double-cab body style, exudes performance, agility, and toughness at first glance.
The wider stance serves as the backbone of the Dakar-inspired design, projecting a strong, stable, and muscular image with prominent satin-black over-fenders that seamlessly integrate into the bumper.
With an increased approach angle and higher ground clearance, the vehicle’s front styling directly references the vehicle’s rally motorsport roots, enhancing the vehicle’s “go-anywhere” capabilities.
The signature GR grille mesh and TOYOTA lettering are highlighted by a strong upright grille designed for maximum cooling area. For aerodynamic efficiency, exterior body parts were sculpted in the wind tunnel.
The new model rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, with a skid plate, rock rails, and red rear recovery points bolstering its off-road credentials.
The interior’s monochromatic black theme is accented by bright sports pedals and red seatbelts. Inside and out, GR branding can be found on the steering wheel, headrests, red brake calipers, exterior badges, and even embossed into the tub-liner.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley stated that the new halo model will strengthen Australians’ unbreakable bond with HiLux.
