Mercedes-Benz Vans is gradually electrifying its entire model lineup. The all-new eSprinter is a true cosmopolitan, with impressive efficiency, range, and load capacity: It will be manufactured in North America and Europe and will reinforce the company’s claim to “Lead in Electric Drive” in approximately 60 markets in the future.
The all-new eSprinter features numerous technical innovations and is based on a new concept comprised of three modules. These provide the most flexibility in the development and design of various conversions and superstructures previously only available on conventionally powered Sprinters.
The front module, a uniformly designed front section, contains all high-voltage components and can be used with any vehicle variant, regardless of wheelbase or battery size.
To save space, the integrated high-voltage battery module is housed in the underbody. The battery’s placement between the axles, combined with the robust battery housing, results in a low centre of gravity, which improves handling and increases driving safety. The rear module with the electrically driven rear axle is the third pillar of the modular design. This is used in all variants of the all-new eSprinter, following the principle of the common parts strategy. The rear module also houses the compact and powerful electric motor.
Mercedes-Benz has spent approximately 350 million euros on the all-new eSprinter. Each of the three plants in Charleston, Düsseldorf, and Ludwigsfelde will receive around 50 million euros to adapt their production. The modular design of the all-new eSprinter allows for maximum production synergies and, as a result, corresponding economies of scale.
